All About the Various Types of Decking Materials

Pressure-Treated Wood

Did you know that pressure-treated wood is one of the most popular choices for decking material? Three-quarters of all decks in the United States contain pressure-treated wood. Pressure is used to soak chemicals into the wood that makes it resistant to the effects of rotting, molding, and insects. Although in the old days, the chemicals used on the wood were potentially toxic, new pressure-treated wood is safer to use as a decking material because the different kind of chemicals used on the wood now. The biggest issue with pressure-treated wood now is that you will probably have to perform regular preventative or reactive maintenance on it because the wood quality will diminish over time.

Composite Decking Materials

Composite decking is one of the most popular decking materials, and with good reason—it’s durable, attractive and inexpensive. But even the most ardent fan of this type of deck won’t be a fan of cleaning composite decks. Composite decking materials combine natural and synthetic materials. While natural wood decks might suffer from warping, rotting, or splintering, composite decks do not encounter these problems. Because these types of decks are also unaffected by insects, you almost never have to worry about performing any maintenance on them.

One of the biggest benefit is being environmentally friendly while also presenting as many style options as possible. They use recycled material, so you won’t have to worry about hurting the environment. But, most of all, composite decking is extremely low maintenance. Where you might have to continually upkeep other materials, composite decking requires only a little TLC now and then. A quick scrub in the spring with dish soap and a sponge is all you really need, which eliminates the use of harsh chemicals entirely.

Exotic Hardwood

You can also choose hardwoods for your deck. However, certain types of hardwood are going to be more expensive than others just because they are so exotic. Despite their higher price tag, these materials will also last an incredibly long time. Whatever type of hardwood you choose, they might come from somewhere tropical. If this is the case, you should ensure that the wood is harvested sustainably. Sustainably-harvested wood is much better for the environment.

Massaranduba, cumaru, red tauari, tigerwood, ipe, and Philippine mahogany are just some of the tropical hardwoods available for decking. These exotic, rich-grained woods are extremely hard, very durable and naturally resistant to rot and insects.

Composite Decking – Envision

Every three or four years, deck owners re-stain and seal their decks to protect the wood from the moisture that otherwise leads to an expensive reconstruction project. Next to power washing, staining is also the best, fastest way to improve the look of your deck. Unfortunately, it’s easy for homeowners to damage their decks with pressure washers, to stain over already-rotted wood, and to apply the stain before a deck is sufficiently dry.
