Seamless Remodeling: Baths – Planning Your Project
Planning your bath remodel usually takes far more time than the actual construction. If you plan well, then the amount of time your home is under construction can be greatly minimized. And you’re more likely to stay on budget.
How much time should you spend planning? The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends at least six months. That way, you won’t be tempted to change your mind during construction and create change orders, which will inflate construction costs and potentially damage your return on investment.
Tips on Planning:
Study your existing bath: How wide is the doorway into your bath? It’s a common mistake many homeowners make: Buying the extra-large tub only to find they can’t get it in the doorway. To avoid mistakes like this, create a drawing of your bath with measurements for doorways, walkways, counters, etc. And keeping height in mind is also recommended.
Design with ergonomics in mind: Drawers or pull-out shelves in the vanity; counter heights that can adjust up or down; placing the toilet in the most sensible place. These are all features that help make a bath comfortable for everyone.
Plan for the unforeseeable: Even if you’ve planned down to the number of nails you’ll need in your remodel, expect the unexpected. Build in a little leeway for completing the remodel. We often suggest: if you’d like your project done by the winter holidays, then plan as though you’d like it done by Thanksgiving.
Choose all your fixtures and materials before starting: This lessens the risk of delays due to back orders – which can seriously cur stunt the process of any remodeling project.

Observational Exercise – here are some ideas to think about:
- Discuss the project with your family to help identify the kinds of options and features you’re looking for
- Observe how the bath is used over time
- What are the heavy use areas in your current bath?
- Are there any challenging spatial issues with the current bath and how will they be addressed in the new space?
